Biophilic design

Humans need to be connected to nature in order to reach their full potential. Studies have now shown that we heal quicker, work more efficiently and are less stressed when we live and work in places that help us connect with nature through plants, natural shapes, materials and interaction with natural environments.

Biophilia is the love of nature. Biophilic design is the practice of integrating every human’s need to be connected with nature into the built environment in which they live and work. Using Biophilic principles we design and create beautiful spaces for the benefit of the people who live, work, learn and play in them.

Biophilic design uses natural materials, light, shapes and textures and other experiences of the natural world to transform the built environment into a place that people will love to spend time in.

“Ever since I was young I have been interested in how the built environment connects with nature. My schoolbooks were full of sketches of homes built into the sides of hills, in trees or amidst huge boulders. The emergence of Biophilic Design has shown how these instincts for maintaining a connection with nature in the built environment are not only aesthetically pleasing but essential for the wellbeing of all people.”

“...the enjoyment of scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it, tranquilises it and yet enlivens it; and thus, through the influence of the mind over the body, gives the effect of refreshing rest and reinvigoration to the whole system”

Frederick Law Olmsted, 1865
